The Description of Benzalkonium Chloride (BKC):
Benzalkonium chloride is the most extensively used preservative in ophthalmology. It is a quaternary ammonium compound which acts as an antimicrobial agent by denaturing proteins and disrupting cytoplasmic membranes.
